Beverly
Smith and Dahlonega's John Grimm have teamed up recently to perform
some of the best old time music heard in the hills of southern
Appalachia in a very long time. Both are well known old time musicians
who can "play the devil out of a multitude of instruments" as well as
sing like two whippoorwills on a hot summer night.
One of the most respected Guitar and Fiddle players in old time
music today, Beverly Smith is also in demand as a singer and dance
caller. Smith's mastery of Carter Family music is as well respected as
it is beautiful. Beverly has toured extensively in both the US
and the UK ,and has played concert halls and festivals all over Europe,
Canada and the US. Besides her duo with John Grimm, Beverly
currently plays and tours with Alice Gerrard, the indisputable Queen of
Old Time Music.
John Grimm's musical talents are unparalleled in the
southern Appalachians and his fiddling and banjo picking represent the
old time tradition at its best. His mournful vocals pull and twist at
the roots of the red Georgia clay he calls home and the forgotten days
of the past. John is an award winning fiddler and multi-instrumentalist
who has played with many old time bands such as The Georgia Mudcats,
The Georgia Potlickers, and Rural Radio Company.

Although the foundation for Bill Sheffield’s music is the Blues,
the live concert contains elements of many other genres'; folk, country
and gospel. Classifying it as Blues may be too limiting.
“Americana” may be the better description. Honest, gutsy,
and passionate, an evening orchestrated by Bill Sheffield
promises to be an unforgettable musical experience.
The big bluesman from Atlanta, Georgia is again accompanied by
The Producers bassist Dave Saunders so this is a fantastic pairing.
Those lucky enough to have seen Bill before know what a great singer/
guitarist and powerful performer he is. With his huge voice and
stunning slide guitar this man puts his heart and soul into every show.
He was guitar legend Roy Buchanons vocalist, touring with Roy
throughout the United States and featuring on Roys Polydor album
‘In the Beginning’. His experience of working for blues
greats such as Big Mama Thornton, Fabulous Thunderbirds, John Lee
Hooker, Muddy Waters (Godfather to Bills daughter!), Bonnie Raitt and
Stevie Ray Vaughan (it’s a little known fact that SRV actually
opened for Bill Sheffield once!) and his laid back yet energy laden
stage style has made him many friends in Europe where he is always made
very welcome.
In press reviews from concerts Bill Sheffield was singled out as an
‘outstanding live performer and possibly one of the best natural
players and forceful vocalists that has ever visited these shores from
the US'.

Named
by his ex boss of 15 years as ‘possibly the greatest Bluesbreaker
of them all’. When that boss was John Mayall and the
‘all’ includes Eric Clapton, Peter Green Mick Taylor,
Walter Trout and Coco Montoya this is no lightweight accolade. Touring
the US supporting ZZ Top for their 1995 ‘Antenna’ World
Tour, and playing alongside Eric Clapton and Mick Taylor in 2003
for John’s 70th Birthday Concert at The King’s Dock Arena
in Liverpool stand out as definite high points of Buddy’s tenure
as a Bluesbreaker.
Buddy has
now stepped out of the shadows into the limelight with his own band.
During several co-headlining tours of Europe and the US featuring
Mayall’s Bluesbreakers and legendary Fleetwood Mac
founder/guitarist Peter Green’s ‘Splinter Group’, a
mutual admiration society emerged between Buddy, Greeny’s bassist
Pete Stroud and organist/pianist Roger Cotton. The musicians enjoyed
watching each others’ sets, began playing together on the encores
and started talking about getting together to play some music if the
opportunity ever availed itself, which it did shortly thereafter when
both The Splinter Group and The Bluesbreakers disbanded and left them
all ‘at liberty.’
‘The Buddy
Whittington Band’ became a reality and a well-attended string of
UK gigs was booked with the addition of drummer Darby Todd, who had
been touring and recording with Gary Moore and Justin Hawkin (The
Darkness) A coup for The Barn so please book early!

in 1991, Alexander's is the leading North West venue, putting on an
amazing range of music including jazz, blues, soul, roots and rock,
comedy & drama. Alexander's is all about ambience and the joy of
being close to the performance. You can also combine an evening's music
with an evening meal. Nestled just inside the City Wall off Northgate
Street, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, is one of
Chester's most striking courtyards. 'Rufus Court’ was developed
in 1991 from a number of 18th and 19th Century derelict houses,
including houses on the City Wall itself. As well as being the home of
Alexander's it is also home to some great places to eat and drink, and
some independent, quirky shops.

A REAL COUP FOR
THE BARN! ONE OF ONLY 2 UK DATES UNTIL NOVEMBER!
Andy Fairweather Low, one of the worlds most respected musicians
rose to prominence in the 1960s as the front man and guitarist for
chart topping teen idol band Amen Corner. His vocals and his
distinctive voice were the perfect lead for the group. Amen Corner
scored 6 memorable hits between 1967 and 1969 with ‘( If Paradise
is ) Half As Nice’ reaching number 1 in January 1969. ‘Wide
Eyed & Legless’ released late in 1975 became another
solo Top 10 hit in the UK and a major International hit record. His
notable contributions to other peoples records started with his
appearance in 1978 on The Whos album ‘Who Are You’,
continued with his appearance on guitar on their ‘Its Hard’
album in 1982 and Pete Townshends Psychderelict tour in 1993. From his
work with The Who Andy moved on as the in demand player and ultimate
guitarist to the stars, building an extraordinary reputation that has
endured to this day. In the early nineties Andy joined Eric Claptons
band with which he stayed until 2003 touring and recording the
‘Unplugged’, ‘From the Cradle’,
‘Pilgrim’, ‘Riding with the King’,
‘Reptile’ ‘One More Car One More Rider’,
‘Me & Mr. Johnson’ and ‘Back Home’ albums
with him.
Andy was also a regular player with George Harrison, appearing
on his ‘Live in Japan’ album and, in 2002, playing several
of the lead guitar parts for the Harrison tribute, ‘The Concert
for George’. One of Fairweather Lows longest musical
relationships, however, has been as musical director with Roger Waters.
The two have worked together since Waters ‘Pros and Cons of
Hitchhiking’ tour of America in 1985. Since that time Andy has
contributed to two of Waters albums ‘Radio K.A.O.S’ in 1987
and ‘Amused to Death’ in 1992 and played guitar and bass on
the 1999-2002 ‘In the Flesh’ world tour. He also rejoined
Waters for the ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ tour more recently.
On November 29th, 2002, one of the most important concerts ever
was staged at the Royal Albert Hall. The Concert for George was a
tribute to George Harrison, under the musical direction of Eric
Clapton. Featuring Joe Brown, Eric Clapton, Jules Holland and Sam
Brown, Dhani Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Paul McCartney, Tom Petty and the
Heartbreakers, Billy Preston, Ravi and Anoushka Shankar and Ringo
Starr. Andy was a member of the Incredible House Band, which, among
other great players, also included Dave Bronze, Gary Brooker, Jim
Capaldi, Ray Cooper, Jim Keltner, Albert Lee and Chris Stainton. Andy
is also a regular member of Bill Wymans Rhythm Kings, the consequence
of another relationship that stretches back to the mid-Eighties. Andy
and Bill first worked together at the Small Faces legendary bass player
Ronnie Lanes A.R.M.S. Action for Research into Multiple Sclerosis
benefit concert at Londons Royal Albert Hall in 1983. In 2011 Andy
contributed some guitar to The Producers album ‘London
Blues’ and has just finished working with Kate Bush on her "50
Words for Snow" album and had a fantastic gig with the Low Riders at
Buckingham Palace... YEP, Buckingham Palace! It was a bash for Prince
Phillip, Eric Clapton played a 25 min acoustic set and Andy was asked
to be part of the band. A night never to be forgotten.
The current band is also a who’s who of the best players
on the rock scene, joining Andy on Drums is Paul Beavis, on Bass is
long standing associate Dave Bronze along with top Sax player Nick
Pentelow.
Dave Bronze has played around the world in just about every
place that music is heard. In a career spanning almost three decades,
Dave has appeared, on record or on stage, alongside such household
names as The Art Of Noise, Belinda Carlisle, Paul Carrack, Eric
Clapton, Roger Daltrey, Bo Diddley, Duane Eddy, Dr. Feelgood, Bryan
Ferry, Nik Kershaw, Jeff Lynne, Paul McCartney, Billy Preston, Procol
Harum, Ringo Starr and Robin Trower. He can be seen playing alongside
Eric Clapton in the "Live in Hyde Park" DVD, and the multi-platinum,
Grammy award-winning tribute to George Harrison, "Concert For George".
Paul Beavis has been playing drums professionally for twenty
five years, during which time he has worked with Judie Tzuke, Robert
Fripp, The Producers, Russ Ballard, Leo Sayer, Thea Gillmore, Andy
Summers, Toyah, Lisa Stansfield, Robbie McIntosh, Terry Britten, The
Waterboys, Alex Parks and Sandi Thom.
Nick Pentelow, one of the UKs top Saxaphone players has
toured and recorded with The Steve Gibbons Band, worked with Roger
Chapmans ‘Shortlist’ and played with numerous blues
bands including Juice on the Loose and Diz and the Doormen and backed
visiting musicians such as Dr. John, Doug Sahm, Augie Meyers and Big
Jay McNeely. Whilst working with Gary Moore, he played alongside
BB King, Albert King and Albert Collins.

Hailed by aficionados and music press around the world as
Europe’s foremost blues harmonica exponent, Paul Lamb has forged
himself a place in the history books as one of the greatest players of
our time. He has won countless awards, sold record-breaking quantities
of albums, and performed the world over with his long-standing musical
compatriots, The Kingsnakes. Inducted into the British Blues Awards
Hall Of Fame (alongside the likes of Peter Green, John Mayall &
Alexis Korner), Lamb still continues to bring his infectious brand of
soulful blues to a plethora of fans around the globe… he has
represented Great Britain in the World Harmonica Championships, leading
to a spell of working with his mentor Sonny Terry and seeing Lamb
performing with Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, Brownie McGhee, and countless
other blues greats that had originally inspired him. To date, the band
can regularly be seen far afield; from Spain to Scandinavia, Belgium to
Bahrain, Hungary to Hong-Kong…His unique harmonica skills are
constantly in demand by others, and he has amongst other experiences
had a chart hit with “Harmonica Man”(under the pseudonym of
“Bravado”) with Pete Waterman, and worked with Mark
Knopfler, The Who, Rod Stewart, and Jimmy Nail amongst others. The band
also features newest member Ryan Lamb on guitar , a great player in the
Jimmy Vaughan style and by co-incidence Pauls son! Vocalist /
guitarist Chad Strentz is rated as one of the top UK singers and has
won awards in his own right.
Genial Doghouse Bass player Rod Demick toured the US for about 6
months supporting Dire Straits then started working with The David
Essex Band, and from 1979 - 1990 was touring, recording albums and
singles with David. Also, he was playing blues gigs around London and
recording with The Strawbs. Eventually, in 1990, a tour of America with
the Strawbs clashed with an Essex tour, and Rod went to America!
By now all he really wanted to do was play the blues again, so on his
return, he started a blues band with some of the Strawbs. As Turkey Leg
Johnson they played the blues circuit around the UK. Turkey Leg didn't
exactly turn out as he had planned, so he joined the Jim McCarty Band,
recording a Yardbirds Reunion Concert CD. Prior to joining Paul Lamb
Rod also worked with Dr. John, Guitar Shorty, Mojo Buford, Ron Kavana,
Jack E McAuley, Terry Woods, Taj Mahal, Snooky Prior, and Gatemouth
Brown.

amazing range of music including jazz, blues, soul, roots and rock,

being close to the performance.

Larry
has a powerful voice and fronts a tight 4 man band, those who have seen
him live will agree his stage presence is second to none. He gigs
tirelessly, all over the country and into Europe and in most peoples
opinion helps fill the void left by the late, great Rory
Gallagher. During the 80's his debut album made No 2 in the
Melody Maker charts, he regularly sold out Londons legendary Marquee
Club and played a storming set at Reading Festival impressing a certain
guitarist by the name of Jeff Beck in the process. He featured in
a Top 10 Strat Players compilation by Blues Matters magazine
alongside Peter Green, Eric Clapton, Roy Buchanan, David Gilmour and
the aforesaid Jeff Beck. He storms into his shows with passion, spirit
and pure guitar genius and with the new album release is sure to go to
the top of the blues/rock tree once again. If heavy blues/rock is your
scene - don't miss Larry!

It’s certainly a month for legends! Back when blues was
king and South Louisiana was the breeding ground for a blast of some of
the most memorable American music ever recorded, at the heart of it was
Lazy Lester. Those days are gone, and so too are most of its
luminaries. And yet Lester carries the tradition almost single-handedly
around the world several times over each year. This 78 year old blues
legend from Baton Rouge, Louisiana has been described variously as a
‘National Treasure’ the ‘High Sheriff of
Louisiana’ and ‘A nut!!’ One of the key
creators of the South Louisiana swamp blues sound in the 1950’s
Lester (aka Leslie Johnson) has often been imitated but never
duplicated - his carefree personality prompting Excello Producer
Miller to dub him ‘Lazy Lester’. Lesters tunes have
been covered time and time again, his ‘I’m a lover not a
fighter’ became a standard requisite of 60’s british blues
band shows and was featured on the Kinks first album and which of the
latest up-coming young SRV clones have ‘Sugar coated love’
in their sets? All of them! None of which beats the Fabulous
Thunderbirds version of one of Lesters best known songs.
As a true living legend, his talents are as much in demand
as ever. After all, there aren’t many living bluesmen
who’ve had major hits, as Lester did on Excello Records in the
1950s and ‘60s, and are still performing with the gusto and
precision of their youth.
He credits Jimmy Reed and Little Walter as his main blues
influences, and you can easily hear Reed’s vocal style in
Lester’s singing. But Lester isn’t shy about telling anyone
that his first love was and still is country – the real,
traditional kind. He got hooked early on Jimmie Rogers and later Hank
Williams, often including some of their songs in his set.
In 2004, he played at Radio City Music Hall in New York as part
of Martin Scorsese’s Year of the Blues super concert that
resulted in his Lightning In A Bottle documentary. The concert included
what was perhaps the most impressive lineup of blues stars ever
assembled.
This is probably your last chance to see a genuine blues legend in such intimate surroundings. Get tickets now and enjoy.

One of the most exciting and stylish new wave
bands on the circuit, Bournemouth based The Producers are among the
leaders of the the current Blues phenomenon topped by Joe
Bonamassa and John Mayer. The Producers are something really
something special, playing the freshest live blues in Britain today.
Concerned with feel and attitude rather than slavishly copying 'hand me
down' American music, The Producers move effortlessly between their own
well crafted material and seriously reinvigorated classics stamped with
their own characteristic identity. By not treating the music as some
kind of museum piece The Producers are likely to incur the displeasure
of a section of the blues hierarchy, however, at the same time they are
barnstorming across the country building a massive audience at sell-out
club dates and developing an equally impressive reputation that no one
can ignore. Being invited to play prestigious Festival slots is always
a sign of a band on its way, however receiving invitations to open
concerts from luminaries like John Mayall, Taj Mahal, Dr John, Peter
Green and Robert Cray has quickly led to The Producers becoming a major
attraction in their own right. With seven acclaimed albums, air play
and live appearances across Europe, the States, Australia and New
Zealand, The Producers are now playing headline dates and rightfully
assuming a prominent position on blues awards podiums.

OUT EARLIER THIS YEAR!
Dire Straits were one of the major guitar based bands of the late 70s.
Despite forming at the height of Punk, front man Mark Knopfler’s
distinctive guitar picking style gave the band an alternative and
instantly recognisable sound. The Band reached its peak in the mid 80s
playing larger venues including a memorable slot at Live Aid. So far
record sales have reached over 100 million worldwide and Knopfler is
still regarded as one of the finest guitarists and songwriters this
country has produced.
Dire Streets are fronted by John Brunsdon, a lifelong guitar picker and
admirer of Mark Knopflers style of playing. He is supported by some
very accomplished musicians who are also members of some of the UKs
best known tribute bands. The bands set include shorter songs from the
early era such as 'Lady Writer' right through to complex album tracks
such as 'Telegraph Road'. No night would be complete without 'Sultans
of Swing' which gets a special rendition over 12 minutes long! Dire
Streets make no attempt to look like the original so no headbands or
pink suits, just brilliant songs skilfully played with the enthusiasm
and respect they deserve.
